Meet Dr. Kalyani Krishnan, M.A, Ph.D.

Dr. Krishnan specializes in understanding the unique strengths and weaknesses of individuals, and in tailoring interventions to fit the individual. She integrates information across cognitive, learning, behavioral and emotional functioning, using a developmentally and culturally informed framework, to arrive at comprehensive and holistic case conceptualizations. Dr Krishnan employs evidence-based practices and treatments. She is trained in a number of evidence-based treatments including Wilson, Project Read and Orton Gillingham for reading, EmPOWER for writing, and MATCH-ADTC (a manualized, evidence-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy protocol for treating anxiety, depression and disruptive behavior in children and adolescents), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy skills, and Acceptance Commitment Therapy. She provides comprehensive psychoeducational evaluations as well as therapeutic support to address academic and emotional difficulties as well as executive dysfunction.

Training and Education

Dr. Krishnan trained as a School Psychologist at Northeastern University in Boston, MA. Her clinical training was completed at Newton South High School, UMass Memorial Hospital’s Outpatient Psychiatry Department, and Judge Baker Children’s Center, where she was a Fellow at Harvard Medical School. She also has a Master’s degrees in Learning Disorders (Northwestern University in Evanston, IL) and Linguistics (Osmania University, Hyderabad India). She has worked for almost three decades with students, schools and families in the Boston area.

Expertise

Previously, Dr. Krishnan provided comprehensive evaluations to learners of all ages to delineate their learning profiles, and diagnose neurodevelopmental and mental health problems including learning disorders, ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, anxiety and depression. Currently, Dr. Krishnan provides highly specialized, individualized, and strategic support to learners with vulnerabilities in executive function, learning (reading, writing, study skills), as well as behavioral and emotional regulation. Dr. Krishnan also specializes in working with families where children are developing their identities in the context of multiple cultures as “children of the third culture”, such as children of immigrant parents. In this work, Dr. Krishnan brings her unique lens and tool kit to the table to help families communicate and work together so they move closer to the life they want.

Trainer, Speaker & Researcher

Dr. Krishnan is also a sought after trainer and speaker for both parent groups and faculty. She currently serves as adjunct faculty at Tufts University and Northeastern University, and has presented at national and international conferences. Her research interests include self-regulated learning, metacognition, learning disorders, and implementation science. She approaches her research and practice from a humanistic, multicultural, and developmental orientation. A list of presentations and trainings is available upon request.
